Interesting how all western Russian neighbouring countries are withdrawing from the Ottawa Treaty

As of June 29, 2025, six European Union (EU) countries have either withdrawn or are in the process of withdrawing from the Ottawa Treaty, which bans the use, production, stockpiling, and transfer of anti-personnel landmines. These countries are:

1. Finland: On June 19, 2025, Finland's parliament voted to withdraw from the treaty, citing heightened security concerns due to its extensive border with Russia .


2. Poland: Announced its intention to withdraw from the treaty on March 18, 2025, alongside the Baltic states, to enhance its defensive capabilities in light of regional threats .


3. Estonia: Declared plans to exit the treaty on March 18, 2025, and formally notified the United Nations of its withdrawal on June 27, 2025 .


4. Latvia: Voted to withdraw from the treaty on April 16, 2025, as part of a coordinated move with neighboring countries .


5. Lithuania: Announced its withdrawal on March 18, 2025, and has also withdrawn from the Convention on Cluster Munitions .


6. Ukraine: Although not an EU member, Ukraine's withdrawal is noteworthy. On June 29, 2025, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree indicating Ukraine's intent to withdraw from the Ottawa Treaty, pending parliamentary approval.
